This week the World Wide Web turns 21 and if you watched the London Olympics opening ceremony you may have spotted its inventor.

It was on August 6 1991 that the very first web page from British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee was made available online but whatever you do don’t confuse the World Wide Web with The Internet.

The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks…and the World Wide Web is just one of the services that runs on that network thanks to the all important technologies invented by Berners-Lee that you see in your daily life online…like the URL (web addresses), HTML…the publishing language of the web and HTTP the protocol that serves up web pages in your browser.
