The Internet is changing. There are now more of us using it, more-so on mobile devices and it’s definitely getting busier. Cisco’s 7th Visual Networking Index forcasts that by 2017, global Internet traffic will be 12 times greater than in 2008.

Looking for ward to 2017 specifically for Australia;

  • Internet traffic will grow 2.3-fold from 2012 to 2017, a compound annual growth rate of 18%.
  • Peak Internet traffic will grow 2.9-fold from 2012 to 2017, a compound annual growth rate of 24%.
  • Internet traffic will reach 650 Petabytes per month in 2017, up from 282 Petabytes per month in 2012.
  • Internet traffic will be 21 Petabytes per day in 2017, up from 10 Petabytes per day in 2012.
  • Internet traffic in 2017 will be equivalent to 2 billion DVDs per year, 162 million DVDs per month, or 222,487 DVDs per hour.
  • In 2017, the gigabyte equivalent of all movies ever made will cross the Internet every 9 hours.
  • Australian Internet traffic in 2017 will be equivalent to 85x the volume of the entire Australian Internet in 2005.
  • Internet traffic will reach 26 Gigabytes per capita in 2017, up from 12 Gigabytes per capita in 2012.
  • Average Internet traffic will reach 2 Tbps in 2017, the equivalent of 1,650,000 people streaming Internet HD video simultaneously.
  • Busy hour Internet traffic will reach 7 Tbps in 2017, the equivalent of 5,550,000 people streaming Internet HD video simultaneously.
