When is a computer error message not a computer error? When it’s a scam. Recently I received a message from Natalie who’s had an error message ( specifically error code RNN8792 )popup up on her Mac that instructed her to call a 1800 number to have an urgent computer problem fixed.
She called the number, handed over credit card details to someone who then accessed the Mac remotely and supposedly ‘fixed’ the computer.
But the real problem here is that there was no problem to begin with as the original error message is actually part of a virus. Good internet security software will keep this sort of activity of your computer.
