Unlike most Tech media I decided to hold back 24hours to properly digest Apple’s latest announcements, including that they were launching the iPhone 4S this month – not the much anticipated iPhone 5.

The initial response from many seems to have been lack lustre and almost as if they were expecting the launch of a device that was so amazing that they could justify upgrading the smart phone bought just last year.

It does also make me wonder “what’s in a name”? Had Apple released this new device with the magic number 5 in its name would the reaction have been the same?

Here’s an overview of what’s new with the iPhone 4S.

Processing power
I consider this to be a pretty big step. The device now has a dual-core processor giving it twice the processing power of the iPhone 4 and 7 times the graphics speed. This will do a lot in the way of multi-tasking and with games and Apple say they have achieved all this without compromising battery life.

The Camera
The iPhone 4S now features an 8mega-pixel camera for still images with improved optics plus the ability to capture 1080p HD video.

The personal assistant
Many smart phones now have some sort of speech recognition built in, allow ling users to make calls and operate various features hands-fee. With the iPhone 4S Apple has taken voice recognition to the next level by introducing Siri. A personal assistant that can help with a broader range of tasks. You simply need to speak your request.

The Operating System
The operating system is the heart of any computer and while the iOS 5 update is also available free to most iPhone and iPod Touch users, you can bet that it’s been made with the latest and future hardware in mind also.

Apple’s official iPhone 4 video is also worth checking out.
