power_socket_auDid you participate in Earth Hour on Saturday night?  This global initiative encouraged people to switch off their lights for just one hour as a demonstration of concern for the environment…but if saving power is your aim, you can do that anytime you like and there are a few gadgets around to make it easier.

If you have multiple appliances plugged into your TV, look out for power boards that will shut those other devices off automatically when you turn the TV off instead of letting them continue to drain power while not in use.

Also if you want to know exactly how much power your appliances are using you can easily find out by using a special energy monitoring device that sits between your appliance and the power power socket.  They can cost as little as $25 and could help you save on future bills.

 Additionally if you have a compatible smart meter installed at your house, you may also consider a device that let’s you monitor how much power your entire house is consuming at any time.  See the example below.
