As more electric vehicles hit the road, some may be wondering what the lifespan of their existing vehicle is.

Well what if you could simply convert your petrol car to an electric one?

That was the thinking of this year’s Australian James Dyson Award winner (and Global Top 20 finalist),  RMIT student Alexander Burton with his Rapid Electric Vehicle Retrofit prototype.

If Alexander is able to pursue his invention, Petrol car driving Australians may one day be able to convert their fossil fuel vehicle to a hybrid-electric vehicle for less than $5,000.

He’s off to a good start with 9 thousand dollars funded into his project as a national award winner, with an additional 50 thousand if he can take out the global James Dyson Award.
