It was a crisp 6 degrees as a couple of hundred people queued outside of EB Games in Swanston Street in Melbourne this morning, but their hearts were warmed by the thought of giving their favourite video game character a big hug.

Coinciding with the launch of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Wii, the aim was to establish a record for the most amount of hugs by a mascot in 20 minutes.

Mario received 172 hugs will some fans even coming back for more. The early morning was helped along by Red Bull energy drinks and Krispy Kreme donuts…plus the opportunity for some hands on time with the game.

Every hugger received their own personal photo of the occasion.
The hugging record is in the process of being formally registered with The World Record Academy, the leading international organisation which certifies world records.
