Australians are spending 60 hours a year just trying to figure out if the messages they receive are real or fake.

With scams becoming more personal and harder to spot, McAfee has updated its Scam Detector to help take the guesswork out of staying safe.

A major focus is the rise of QR code scams on things like parking meters and restaurant menus. Nearly half of us who land on a suspicious page after scanning a code end up taking a risky action, like entering personal details. The new tool now checks those codes instantly before you click through.

The protection also extends to social media, flagging suspicious DMs on WhatsApp and Messenger, even if they don’t contain a link.

With one in four Australians having lost money to a scam, it is a timely upgrade to our digital defenses.
