What do you look for in Headphones?  If you’re hunting for your first set of ‘serious’ headphones or looking to upgrade then you’ll know that there are plenty to choose from, but what boxes need to be ticked for you?

Some things to consider include if you intend to wear them for long periods of time, where you’ll be listining, what you’ll be listening to, features like spacial sound, form factor, brand reputation and style.

As I write this I’m sitting on a long flight (15hours), the perfect opportunity to put Sony’s WH-1000XM6 headphones to the test.  The persistent engine noise you experience on aircraft can impact your ability to sleep and cause fatigue as your brian processes the content sound.   I’ve simplified it, but I think if you’re been on a long flight you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

In this situaion you need headphones that are comforable, do an amazing job of noise cancellation, have a great battery life, and have a compact form factor for travel.   No suprise that the Sony WH-1000XM6 ticks all these boxes.

Now I should add there that I already own the previos model (WH-1000XM5) and woyld have happily brought them on the trip, but was curous to see what’s changed given Sony’s repuation, especially as an industry leader in noise cancellation.

So as you can already tell I’m talking about these headphones in the context of air travel, but if headphones can nail the brief here you can bet killing off ambient office or public transport noise will be a cake walk.

How does Sony do it better with the WH-1000XM6?

Sony has packed the hew headphones with a brand-new HD Noise Cancelling Processor, the , and a whopping twelve microphones. That’s more than the last model, and it means these headphones are ridiculously smart. They listen to your environment in real-time and create a bubble of near-perfect silence around you faster and more accurately than ever before. This means you can enjoy your music at any level without sacrafice.

One thing you should know about noise cancellation is that when it’s not done well, it can add or take away sounds from the original recording – you don’t want this.   The sound profile for this new series was  co-created with the actual mastering engineers who worked on albums for artists like Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Bob Dylan. These are the people whose job it is to perfect the final track.

So far we’ve got great noise cancellation and true sound respoduction – two very important boxes to tick, but let’s talk battery life and comfort.   15 hour flight with active noise cancellation won’t be a problem as these headphones promise 30 hours in this scenario and weighing in at 256grams they feel like on your head and comfy on the years…for the whole flight.

If you’re serious about sound and looking to invest in a pair of headphones that you won’t regret, the Sony WH-1000XM6 makes a compelling case. They combine world-class noise cancellation with audiophile-grade sound in a package that’s both smart and comfortable.

Yes they sell for the premium pirce of $699, but your ears with thank you for it.
